What I personally found most intriguing about this movie was Nick Naylor's ability to navigate a conversation in a way where he was always able to get the exact outcome he wanted. This is why he was such a good lobbyist as he would always come out on top in debates and arguments.
A concept I found interesting in this movie was "moral flexibility". Nick explains this to his son by telling him that even people who commit the most heinous crimes have a right to a fair trial and asking him if he would defend a person like that as a lawyer. Nick then tells his son that big corporations deserve that right as well.
Nick's moral reasoning for his job comes from his belief in a fair trial and defense as well as two other reasons. "Doing it for the mortgage" is his other reason as he is very good at what he does and is paid well. His third moral reasoning for working for big tabacco is that he believes in people's freedom to make their own choices when it comes to their health. He can be a spokesperson and promote cigarettes, but for someone to smoke is their own choice. He even said that if his son wanted to smoke when he turned 18, he would buy him his first pack.
